Lately I’ve noticed a lot more AI generated stuff showing up on plugin sites. The most noticable are plugin logos, you can easily tell when they were made by AI.

On one hand AI can help people who aren’t good at art or maybe even speed up development. On the other hand it might also mean we see alot of low-effort plugins or generic looking content.

Curious what you guys think. Do you see this as a good change for the community or more of a problem in the long run?

It really depends. Someone who doesn't have a background and knowledge in programming, and uses AI to make a "plugin" or whatever, can do it, but they will not understand a single thing that AI wrote for the script and that is the issue. They can introduce bunch of issues like that. But if it's someone who has knowledge and uses AI to help me make process faster then I don't see a issue with it. I use it on daily basis and it really pumped up my productivity and speed in developing things.

In my experience, AI makes a lot of mistakes, especially in terms of security. Using AI speeds up the creation process, but for now, it requires a programmer behind the scenes reviewing the code, not just someone who sends a prompt to an AI and generates a plugin, because currently, it's not that good.
In the future, when AI improves, I'm sure anyone with ideas for creating plugins can implement them, which would bring new content and certainly make paid content cheaper.

In my experience artificial intelligence like chat GPT and other are kinda childish they often ask you to guide them not giving you a guidance but it can be helpful if you use your brain to feed the intelligence about how exactly you want to make things for you then anything is possible but the tricky part is with the free version most of the intelligence having limits and explaining long term goals can make you end up stuck at the limit and starting fresh new chat especially with chat GPT, and also working on a long term project when you need logs can make your experience really leggy after 2 days of logs it can a stuck your browser or the app you are using especially on PC, but still if you can manage all that frustration it can be helpful for you

I wouldn't shun the use of "AI" in every case, because I think it can be used responsibly as part of the development workflow. Sometimes you need a second pair of "eyes" to look over broken code, or something, and plugging it into a coding-specialised LLM might ping an issue. But it shouldn't be relied on, especially if you're lacking in experience. Having to actually maintain a vibecoded plugin sounds like a nightmare. You wouldn't know what piece of code did what, so if it broke, you'd be SOL.

Moreover, I don't think it should be used for anything public-facing. When I read obviously AI-generated text or see obviously AI-generated images, I immediately get the ick because I've learned to associate the (lack of) quality with scams. It makes me think "if you couldn't take the time to photoshop stock elements together, or ask an artist friend for help, or just sit down and write the selling points of your plugin, why should I trust that you've put in the time and effort to actually create a decent product"? This goes for more than just Minecraft plugins; I play a lot of modpacks and stuff, and there's more and more slop being pushed out with AI generated images/descriptions and incompatible mods that crash the game on load. Ugh.

It really can't be a double-edged sword. I know that when I've been coding for games like with a global game jam for example I've had to use it a few times to figure out things where I can easily get stuck but still once it explains to me because I also explain why it does what it does or why it's telling me what it's telling me then it helps me dissect exactly what it creates so I can then learn from that. It's like looking up the answers in the back of a book to see the answers in some textbooks. You have the problem, then you have the solution. As long as you use it responsibly then you can backwards engineer and it could be a great teaching tool. But unfortunately some people use it just as a complete shortcut and when it keeps doing it for them they'll continue to do so as long as I see no direct repercussions.
