Risks of Updating from 4.6.12.1 to the latest 5.X version?

So, I've procrastinated long enough and I'm looking into updating the IPS version from 4.6.12.1 to the latest 5.X version available. I'm kinda fearing the DB breaking and having to loose all the information, getting people to register again, etc. Is there any risks for doing this? any recommendations to avoid such a disaster? thanks in advanced.

Hey BaldwinIV!
The simplest answer is a backup! Try setting up IPS 5.x on a separate instance with the same plugins and applications and importing the database. If everything works, it should be fine to try on your main site. (Typing this on a small ahh phone was so hard)
