Quality of cover-images of articles for guests

In an article-node that is visible to guests, the covers in the grid are shown in very bad quality. This is due to attachments not allowed for guests, and the cover is taken from the first attachment in the article. In that case it seems, that only the enlarged thumbnail of the attachment is shown as a cover. I would call this a bug, maybe it is by design.
