How do people stay on their forever worlds?

For a long time ive wanted to start my own forever world but i just end up getting bored. How do people keep playing? I'd love to make big builds but i kind of get overwhelmed and quit.

Ive also thought about maybe starting one with some light mods like veinminer or backpacks etc but then i feel like i am "cheating"

What are some things you do to keep playing the same world?

Any tips or tricks?
