A City of Old

Hello All,

I’ve somewhat tossed and turned over sharing the old photos that I have of this city, because the quality of the photos isn’t great (they are literal shots of a screen) and you don’t get the embedded experience from the photos. Also, while I loved this concept, it is a very old project, and I’ve created far more impressive projects in both creative and in survival mode.

Given that the community is generally very supportive and folks tend to opt in if interested and opt out if not, I thought I’d give this a share.

This was a creative mode world. The idea was to create more of a grid-style city. In my past creative mode world, I had built a series of hill fort cities, walled cities, half-submerged cities, subterranean castles (one beneath a lake), and temples and quartz-walled transport tubes with lapis lazuli and glowstone inlays spanning the nether, each city and space with its own block theme.

In all of my worlds, I tend to work with the natural environment, especially in survival world modes, refraining from visible strip mining, and using every mining operation to make a glorious underground city like those of the Mines of Moria.

In this case, I tried something different. Instead of intuitive design, I sought to create a city on a grid, with the two primary anchor points being the large purple manor and the temple. So I found a field near volcanic activity, leveled it, and built. I never finished the project, but I wanted each building to have a unique flavor. I also created a manor district off the East face of the temple, raised above the lower districts.

The large and rather empty building was meant to be a transport hub and storage facility. Storage was meant to be held in several stories of rafters, with the subterranean sector of the building leading out with railways to each major settlement and landmark.

What I do not have pictures of is how I built a large columned nether portal in the base level of this temple, and that it led into a parallel universe, with each building built in opposite hues. I only ever finished the nether brick temple and the full facade of the purple manor in a light brick scheme on the other side.

At any rate, it’s still a special city to me.

If you all like this, I will make a video of this and other cities.
