| Because for ice to form it requires a full block to be directly touching it, we can use half slabs to keep bodies of water from freezing over. I was reeeaaaally careful and tried this on a small pond first, then a section of our actual river. After some experimentation, we found that Smooth Quartz looks best, with and without shaders, to mimic the look of partially-frozen ice around the edges. In this process, I have to be quick but careful. Missing even one block of ice or overlooking a missed place for slabs will give the ice a start point, and it can spread from there if you don't catch it. I took a recording of this last bit (just a minute of gameplay) because it's kind of stressful but satisfying!! Really excited to see this in a more completed state! This is my second "proper" big project in this world. It's really not as difficult as I was thinking it would be. The original figuring out of how to do it and make it look nice was the biggest issue. And collecting quartz... submitted by /u/Pingonaut [link] [comments] |
