Hello! The other day I was talking with my teacher (I'm an architectur student) about the possibilities of designing for the metaverse, when he struck me with a question that keeps me up at night. He said: why should we build with our conventional systems in a platform that does not follow certain rules (gravity, material resistance, etc), when we could start thinking about living in floating bubbles, inside animals, etc?
I immediately thought about Minecraft. For most of my gaming life I have built things that look and function pretty similar to those in real life. And I believe most of us do. Call it building giant skyscrapers, cities, castles, mansions, houses, for the better part of what I can find in the internet, we are mostly replicating buildings, when we could be doing some very unfamiliar stuff?
I would say it has to do with people searching for similarities in the way they inhabit their real world and their Minecraft worlds. Or maybe it could do with the very specific furniture and blocks we get in Minecraft (hard to imagine a different way of sleeping when the only option is a regular bed). Also, as I told my teacher, Minecraft players and metaverse inhabitants don't care as much about how rethinking how they inhabit these places and being disruptive, they are just trying to have a good time.
My point here is, in Minecraft there's no need to protect from weather or rain, most blocks literally float and can be placed however we'd like... And yet walls, ceilings, beds, windows, etc are common found.
I'd LOVE to hear your thoughts on this subject! Perhaps I'm missing something else or you could refer me to useful information on this topic, other communities more suitable, etc.
