sapling drop rates of different trees

I wanted to know how many saplings, on average, are dropped by the different tree types, for each placed sapling.

To get this, I used command blocks to place a sapling, wait for it to grow, break the tree down, collect all the items, and repeat this 100 times.

Results:

For 100 trees, here are the number of dropped saplings and the sapling return rate (dropped saplings divided by 100 or 400 for large trees)

  • Cherry: 1264 -> 12.64
  • Acacia: 421 -> 4.21
  • Oak: 361 -> 3.61
  • Spruce: 301 -> 3.01 / 1101 (small tree) -> 2.7525 (large tree)
  • Birch: 261 -> 2.61
  • Jungle: 127 -> 1.27 (small tree) / 660 -> 1.65 (large tree)
  • Dark Oak: 604 -> 1.51 (large tree)
  • Pale Oak: 567 -> 1.4175 (large tree)

Interpretation:

  • cherry trees drop a ridiculous amount of saplings
  • for spruce trees, you will gain slightly more saplings when growing small trees
  • for jungle trees, you will gain less saplings when growing small trees → try to take enough saplings from a jungle so you don't risk having less than 4 should you get unlucky, and don't use your spare 1-3 saplings to grow smaller trees unless you already have enough saplings
  • pale oak has the worst sapling return (if you don't count the small jungle trees)

notes: i'm not very active on reddit. also, idk which flair to pick for this, but guides&tutorials fits the vibe best imo :)
