Restoring Username Login?

Hi, hope I'm in the right place to post this.

But would anyone know how to do this?

Yes I'm aware it's a security risk and not suggested. But I've used IPB since 1.3, to 3.x and I miss that feature. And with trying to get friends from Twitter in the anime communities on my forum, no one wants to use their emails either. So if someone could tell me how or at least point me in the right direction to changing it back, I'd be much appreciated.

I also would like to possibly use the layout feature but per category. So instead of the whole forum being grid, letting one category being grid while the others are table. I know there's a 4.x plugin that does that, but if it's just something I can do myself, I'd love to know if possible. Though I'm not sure if I need to make a new topic for that.

EDIT: I'm asking about this for IPB 5.

I am pretty sure they disabled the option to use just usernames in the version 5, at least I am not aware of the option for it like you could do on the older version like 4.7.
As for grid thing, you would probably need to write some custom code for it.

I know they disabled it in the ACP. But there's no work around to re-enable it? Or did they like disable it in a million spots in the files and build the forum on disabling it?

I am not sure, I didn't go that deep into that version, I would assume they would make it backward compatible with older versions, but then again, it's totally possible that they removed that feature altogether.
