Regarding the "2 week minecraft phase"

I've been trying to think about the underlying mechanisms that can explain why people get bored of worlds so fast. Especially in a server/realm setting, because i want to play with my buddies.

  1. Novelty - when our main motivation to participate in a new world is the freshness of it, we lose motivation when that wears off.

  2. Direction - we tend to have a certain order and general idea of where to go when we start a minecraft world (go mining, make a house, build farms). when we reach the end of our "automatic" processes, we tend to be aimless and lose motivation to continue playing.

We fall into a routine where we lose the ability to think outside the box and create imaginative worlds. Instead, we view the game as a linear progression which gets stale.

  1. Attrition (servers) - when other players stop playing, we ourselves tend to be more prone to stopping. especially when a large part of our motivation comes from playing with others. or even when others are still playing, we can feel a similar way when our schedules never align, leading to everyone logging on in isolation instead of playing together.

  2. Activity difference (servers) - when one player plays far more than others, they can exude an overwhelming influence on the world. other players can feel detached from the world or feel as though it's not theirs anymore. this can occur from players progressing too quickly or dominating the landscape with their builds and ideas.

This can be difficult because it creates tension between those that are more motivated to play and those that are less motivated. Instead of the active players inspiring the unmotivated players to participate, they widen the gap.

  1. Differences in goals/direction (servers) - when multiple players have different ideas for progression, they can often begin to veer away from one another. Even differences in building style can discourage collaboration. When players begin distancing from one another due to differences in ideas, they might lose motivation to play as the world becomes less cooperative.

These are just some ideas I've thought about. Can you guys think of anymore? Are there any ways you've thought to solve these? What are your experiences of this "burnout" in both single player worlds and servers? I'd love to hear.
