(Possibly) Unpopular opinion: I actually like the content from the newer updates

Now, I want to clarify here, firstly, I’m not just trying to lick Mojang’s boots, I do think there’s a lot of things they need to improve on. And secondly, when I say “newer” update, I’m talking about the more “controversial” updates, that being 1.17, 1.18, 1.19, and 1.20.

That being said, I actually enjoyed these updates. If you consider Caves and Cliffs as one update which just took Mojang two years due to its scope, it actually ends up being a fantastic update, and a really solid refresh to world generation. 1.19 was absolutely the weakest link, and scrapping Fireflies and the Birch Forest refreshes was really disappointing, and the way they handled the situation just rubbed salt into the wound. However, what was there was good, the Mangrove Swamps were a fun new biome, and the Ancient Cities were mostly well done. As for 1.20, I actually really enjoyed the randomness of a lot of the update’s features, it reminded me of the pre-Microsoft updates like 1.7 and 1.8. And honestly 1.21 is shaping up to be a solid addition to the game.

I do understand the arguments that updates like 1.19 and 1.20 were effectively backlogs for what should have been part of Caves and Cliffs (Deep Dark and Archaeology). However, I also feel that the versions of these features that were far more expanded upon that what we would have gotten if they had all been in Caves and Cliffs, and honestly I prefer having these expanded versions of these features, even if it means it takes longer to get them.

As for the argument that Mojang’s lazy, I’m a believer in the theory that Mojang is effectively too tied up in red tape to actually be able to add anything. I get this to an extent, I mean, every feature has to be something that is going to be in the game forever (unlike mods which can remove or rework features as they please), and has to work across Java and Bedrock (or else you end up like the Bundle, fully functional on Java, but can’t be officially added since they can’t get it working on Bedrock). On the other hand, I do think that Mojang could utilise Snapshots and Previews to get around this, and add, remove, and expand on features based on player feedback before actually creating a final release.

I think Mojang’s biggest issue is not their updates, but their PR. For 1.13-1.18, their PR was great, but for whatever reason, it fell off HARD during 1.19, between the removal of the Fireflies and Birch Forest revamp (and the reasons they gave for their removal), and the Chat Reporting controversy, Mojang’s images plummeted, and they haven’t been really able to fully recover. Honestly, if Mojang had not shown us the Birch Forests and Fireflies, and marketed 1.19 as Swamps and Sounds or whatever, I doubt it would have been near,y as controversial. Then of course there was the Mob Vote controversy, all of them have garnered some controversy, but I’d say 2020 and 2023 were the worst. Of course, in 2020, Dream was able to manipulate the Twitter polls and give the Glow Squid the win, despite the fact that most of the fanbase favored the Iceoillager. To be fair, that wasn’t really Mojang’s fault, and they have taken action to ensure that issues like that don’t happen again by allowing player to vote on their own website/launcher/etc, meaning way more people can vote (and not just people on Twitter). The 2023 Mob Vote, on the other hand, was all them. I get the mob vote can be a bit of fun, and it does generate buzz for the game, but restricting three long requested features behind a vote where only one can win was a bit of a **** move.

So yeah, I think content wise, the recent updates have been pretty good, maybe not 1.16 good, but mostly on par with updates like 1.13 and 1.14. Instead, the bigger problem being Mojang’s PR. I do think though that Mojang need to do something to generate more buzz about the game and win back their former reputation. As for generating buzz, an End Update would be a really good way to do this, especially if it could compete with 1.16 in terms of quality. Not every update has to be 1.16 levels of quality, but it’d be really good for the game to have one every few years to generate buzz. And as for winning back reputation, adding the features that were promised with the Crab and Penguin (increased reach and boat speed respectively) without actually adding the losing mobs themselves (as that would defeat the point of a vote) would be a really good way to do this, since players would still get those features, even if they missed out on the actual mob.

So yeah, those are my thoughts feel free to leave yours in the comments, and thanks for reading!
