| My mom always used to watch me play games from a distance. English isn’t our first language, and she doesn’t understand it, but she could always see the excitement in me while I played. She would even discuss some of the events she noticed in the games, showing genuine interest. I always dreamed of getting her to play computer games herself. Over a year ago, after nearly two decades of watching me play, she finally mustered the courage to try. She’s incredible! She started with dialogue-free games like Dysmantle (where she played over 1,000 hours across three save files, completing the game and all DLCs 100%), Far Cry Primal, and Limbo before moving on to The Last of Us (with our language available) and a few others. What’s been most fascinating for me is how differently she perceives games compared to experienced players like myself. Starting with no preconceptions, she explored each game as its own unique world, revealing to me just how varied and distinct games truly feel. Her fresh perspective was a revelation - something I hadn’t fully appreciated before. Her approach to Dysmantle was especially inspiring. She wasn’t slow but incredibly exploratory and investigative, diving into every detail the game had to offer. Watching her play taught me new things about a game I thought I knew inside out. To top it all off, I’ve finally convinced her to start learning English so she can enjoy narrative-driven games. What Remains of Edith Finch will be our first attempt, and I couldn’t be more excited for her! Here’s a short video of a Minecraft trip we took yesterday. It was so much fun, and I’m so proud of her. We’ll be exploring more soon! submitted by /u/Maltaannon [link] [comments] |
