I think I found a big reason why a lot of people think older minecraft is better.

so recently me and my friend restarted our server on 1.2.5 just to try it out, and you know, it was actually very fun. I feel like I had my greatest burst of creativity within minecraft for the first time in years, however, because it is a very old version, being over 10 years old at this point, it is naturally very buggy, the block pallet is rather small, and when I invited some more friends to come and play with us, we found out that apparently windows 11 makes very old versions like that basically unplayable, so we decided to restart the server again, but this time with 1.20.

However, despite getting a reasonably decent spawn in our new world and being able to access basically everything with the drop of a hat, plus a myriad of new blocks and other features to play with, we've been having a really hard time actually putting any of it to use, and I think I just realized why.

It's the terrain! Modern terrain is just way too rough to deal with. Take a look at these plains biomes. I went and found some plains in 1.2.5, 1.20, and 1.12.2 to be a sort of 'middle ground' between those versions too.

so here's 1.2.5 (I guess I included a desert too, but deserts are often found right next to plains in this version, and they share similar properties to each other, so it's a good too I guess.)

Look how crazy rough 1.20 plains are! Those aren't plains, they're mountains! Hills atleast! I see now why it was so fun for us to play 1.2.5, despite its many limitations; when you wanted to build something, the land was already perfect to do so. You wouldn't need to terraform the entire biome and destroy its natural shape and beauty, which can take a friggin' long time and/or a ton of resources just for it to be useable for a little town or something, especially in 1.20 where getting diamonds and netherite for the tools is significantly harder than it used to be.

I think it would probably do the game a lot of good if the terrain noise generators were tweaked a bit to make biomes that are supposed to be flat comparable to older versions of the game, because as it is currently, I don't think me and my friends are going to stick around with 1.20, it's just not worth the effort to go and build stuff, which I think it's kinda a shame, because it kinda kills the creative spirit of the game (in my opinion atleast), and 1.20 has a lot of cool stuff to play with. we wanted to build the Mojo-dojo-casa-house with the new cherry wood, but we can't do that because there's no good space to build it and we don't want to waste time leveling the ground to do that. We're not 12 anymore, we don't have all the time in the world to play minecraft anymore. :(

We'll also probably just stick with 1.12, because in the middle of writing this I decided to go check out 1.16 as well, and I found that plains biomes in that version carry similar roughness, but they're significantly smaller, being about half the size on average compared to previous versions (except snow plains, those tend to be massive for whatever reason) and I imagine this change is probably the result of how 1.13 really changed world generation as a whole with the changes to oceans.
