Do you need to go to the Nether to beat the game?

Hey wife and I are at the Nether phase of the game on our first ever attempt to beat the dragon. But my question is, do we even need to be here? I'm looking for a reason to, because I think it's fun progression. But aside from being able to find possible goodies, do we actually truly need anything from the Nether?

What if we already know where a portal is from a seed map?
