Gotta say. I love it. That's now what you expected, right? I've seen lots of online buzz about "minecraft not being what it used to be", but I actually absolutely love most of the new stuff.
I especially love the new implied lore stuff. Vague enough that it can mean anything to you, but with enough hints for it to paint a picture. At the risk of sounding pretentious, I really like how Minecraft has become this post apocalyptic setting, and that we are the last remnants of an ancient race of builders who left behind these immense monuments. It really fits the desolate lonely feel Minecraft has always had.
As for the new mechanics. Villages are just so much more in-depth now than they used to be. I love how spawning near one can completely change your playthrough to focus more on managing and protecting the village so that you can get easy access to all kinds of tools and items.
The world generation is just very nice now. Landscapes are overall a lot more beautiful, and varied in terms of gameplay. The surface is significantly less flat and requires more active traversal. Water isn't a complete waste of time. Biomes seems to flow together much more logically, caves are also just really nice and can get properly immense. Water and caves now mix a lot more nicely too.
