Avatar Quality Issue?

I've noticed that user avatars appear to be of low quality when browsing threads and posts, but when you visit their profile, the quality improves. I'm wondering if this is an issue on my end, with my browser, or if it's a limitation of the platform

Also, I'm curious about the best format for uploading avatars to ensure optimal quality. Is it better to use JPG or PNG files?
