Help Servers Plugins Altar crafting mechanics

Hi, I'd like to have some sort of altar system on my server for summoning or crafting. Something very mod-like, involving creating a structure with a central block. Dropping certain items from the item adder will work "magic" and craft a new item or summon a boss. Any ideas on how to do this are welcome. Would I need to make a plugin from scratch? Could it be done with plugins? Any ideas are welcome.
