I think the direction they chose was a terrible idea. I think they shouldn't have approached Minecraft as a "video game", they should have used it as a setting. A fantasy setting with it's monsters, artefacts and laws. Take this and make any story you want inside of it.
We already have great examples of this. Just look at all the animations people have done over the years, with the best example probably being the Fallen Kingdom. It has great graphics which still look Minecraftish, it uses the Minecraft setting while adding something new, and it's an engaging story with memorable characters. It's a fanmade project, but I guarantee it's way better than whatever the actual Minecraft Movie is gonna be
