to put it kindly, I'm frustrated at the moment regarding windows server 2008's crazy update mechanism but hey that's the cost of using software that's 10+ years old

I am experiencing:
1) I downloaded a lot of updates from the MS update catalog but how do I know which to install in what order, which updates are linked to which roles/features thus if it's not installed I know I can skip it
2) How do I make 100% sure I have all the updates possible for windows server 2008 and all of its features and roles thus if MS decides to pull them down, I already have them here.
